Types of pain Flashcards
Define nociceptive pain
Pain resulting from stimulation of peripheral nerves, transmitted by undamaged nervous system
Define the types of nociceptive pain?
(Visceral) Liver, bowel, cardiac
(Somatic) Bone, soft tissue
Define neuropathic pain
Pain arising from damage to peripheral or central nervous system
Define the types of neuropathic pain
(Nerve compression)
(Nerve injury) Peripheral, central, sympathetically maintained
Describe the opioid response of nociceptive vs neuropathic pain vs peripheral
Nociceptive: Opioid responsive
Neuropathic: Partially opioid responsive
Define peripheral pain
Pain caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system. Associated with altered sensation
Define central pain
Pain caused by damage within the central nervous system.
Define sympathetically-controlled pain
Pain caused by sympathetic nerve injury. Associated with burning, sensory disorder related to vascular rather than neural distribution. Other symptoms include reduced sweating, dry shiny skin
