Q

Single User / Multitasking

A

Most Common

Users can multitask

E.g. Windows, MacOS

Can work on relatively cheap computers

Tend not to be very complex for the end user

Q

Network Operating System

A

Runs on a server and allows to manage data, users, groups, security, applications and other networking functions

Allow shared file and printer access among multiple computers in a network

Many users connect to one computer, each user has a unique session

E.g. Microsoft Windows Server, Unix, Linux, Novell NetWare

Q

Advantages

A

Centralised Servers are highly stable

Security is server managed

Upgrades to new technologies and hardware can be easily integrated into the system

Remote access to servers is possible from different location and types of systems

Q

Disadvantages

A

High cost of buying and running a server

Dependency on a central location for most operations

Regular maintenance and updates are required

Q

Disitributed OS

A

Use multiple central processors to serve multiple real-time applications and multiple users

Data processing jobs are distributed among the processors accordingly

A User at one site may be able to use the resources available at another

Speed up the exchange of data with another via electronic mail. If one site fails in a distributed system, the remaining sites can potentially continue operating

Better service to the customers. Reduction of the load on the host computer

Reduction of delays in data processing

Q

Cloud Operating System

A

Designed to operate within cloud computing and virtualisation environments

Manages the operation, execution and processes of virtual machines, virtual servers and virtual infrastructure as well as the back-end hardware and software resources

Primarily manages the operation of one or more virtual machines within a virtualised environment
