Types of Numbers Flashcards
What are ‘integers’?
Whole numbers, both positive and negative, including zero.
What is a ‘negative integer’?
A negative whole number.
What is a ‘natural integer’?
A positive whole number.
What are ‘rational numbers’?
Numbers that can be written as a fraction, in which the numerator and denominator are integers.
What are ‘irrational numbers’?
Numbers which cannot be written as fractions. In decimal form, these numbers are infinite, and the same pattern of digits is never repeated.
What are ‘square numbers’?
A number resulting from the multiplication of two of the same numbers. Example: 36 (6x6).
What are ‘cube numbers’?
A number resulting from the multiplication of number multiplied by itself 3 times. Example: 125 (5x5x5).
What are ‘surds’?
Numbers left written as a square root, cube root, and so on, but not a square number. Example, a surd will not be the square root of 2, as that is a square number.
What are ‘prime numbers’?
Numbers above 1 that cannot be divided by anything, except for 1 and itself.
What are ‘real numbers’?
Rational numbers, irrational numbers, whole numbers, and natural numbers. All real numbers can be written in decimal form.
What is a ‘factor/divisor’?
A number which will divide into your numbers exactly, leaving no remainder. Example: a factor of 6 is 3 (6 / 3 = 2).
