Types of Numbers. Flashcards
What are natural numbers?
Natural numbers are whole numbers greater than zero.
Give 4 examples of natural numbers.
These numbers are 1, 2, 3, and 4……numbers that you can physically count.
What are integers?
Integers are whole numbers, both positive and negative, including zero.
What are positive integers?
Positive integers are integers greater than zero (for example, 1, 2, and 3).
What are negative integers?
Negative integers are integers less than zero (for example, -1, -2, and -3).
What are rational numbers?
Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction where both the numerator and denominator are integers.
Examples of rational numbers.
1/3.
22/7.
123654987/100000000.
What are irrational numbers?
Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be written as a fraction.
Examples of irrational numbers.
√ (square root).
e (Euler’s number).
π (pi symbol).
Φ (the golden ratio).
What are real numbers?
Real numbers are numbers that you have come across i.e. ALL rational and irrational numbers.
What are square numbers?
Square numbers are integers that can be written as the square of some other integers i.e. a product of an integer multiplied by itself.
What are Surds?
Surds are numbers left in the form √n, where n is a positive integer that is not a square number.
What are prime numbers?
Prime numbers are numbers greater than 1 that can only be divided by themselves and 1 to give an integer answer.
(1 IS NOT A PRIME NUMBER!).
