Types Of Muscular Contraction Flashcards
Types of muscular contraction
- isotonic eccentric
- isotonic concentric
-isokinetic - isometric
Isotonic concentric contraction
-muscle length shortens during contraction
- working upwards against gravity
- most common
E.g of isotonic concentric
Quadriceps in up phase of a squat
Isotonic eccentric contraction
- muscle length increases whilst the force is being developed
-lowering down with gravity
Isotonic eccentric contraction e.g
Quadriceps in down phase of squat
Isometric contraction
-Force is developed but there is no change in the length of the muscle
-Produces the most amount of force-> tires easily
Isometric contraction e.g
Prone hold, rock climbing, gripping weights, holding a bat
Isokinetic contraction
Muscle length changes and the force created by the muscle is maximal through the whole range of motion
Isokinetic contraction e.g
Special isokinetic machines e.g isokinetic leg press or hamstring curl
