Types Of Movements At Diarthrosss Or Synovial Joints Flashcards
Movement back and forth or side to side with the rotation or angular motion.
Example: movement between the carpals and tarsals
Gliding
Movement which draws bones toward each other, or decreases the angle of the joint to the bone.
Example: bending the elbow, knee, neck, and curling toes.
Flexion
Movement which separates the bones from one another, or increases the angle of the joint to bone.
Example: straightening the elbow or knee, lifting the head, or uncurling toes.
Extension
Moving part of the body away from the midline of the body. (four fingers and toes it is relative to midline of hand or foot.)
Example: raising an arm away from the body or spreading the digits.
Abduction
Moving a part toward the midline of the body.
Example: bringing an arm towards the body.
Adduction
The movement of a bone around its own axis with no other simultaneous motion.
Example: turning the head from side to side or turning whole arm.
Rotation
Motion where the proximal end of a bone is stable in the distal and moves in the form of a cone.
Example: The motion of the pictures wind up.
Circumduction
The motion of the forearm which turns the palm backward or downward from the elbow. It does not rotate the humerus.
Example: rotation of the form so the Palm faces down.
Pronation
A motion of the forearm which turns the palm forward or upward from the elbow. It does not rotate the humerus.
Example: rotation of the form so the Palm faces up.
Supination
Moves the sole of foot inwards towards the opposite foot at the ankle.
Example: the movement is specific to the ankle
Inversion
Moves the sole of foot outward at the ankle and away from the other foot.
Example: specific to the ankle
Eversion
Flexing the foot upward at the ankle.
Example: the movement is specific to the ankle
Dorsiflexion
Flexing the foot downward at the ankle.
Example: the movement is specific to the ankle
Plantar flexion
Movement of a bone anteriorly parallel to the ground.
Example: sticking the Jaw out or moving the arms so the elbows touch in front of the body.
Protraction
Movement of a bone backward or posteriorly parallel to the ground.
Example: when the upper and lower incisors meet to nip food.
Retraction
