Q

What is procedural memory?

A

Procedural memories are unconsciously recalled patterns of information which facilitate motor functions and physical movements such as walking, eating and speaking. These procedures don’t require a concerted effort to perform because they’re deeply consolidated within our brains, the neural pathways entrenched to such an extent that recalling them becomes second nature.

Q

What is semantic memory?

A

Semantic memory is related to our understanding of language and layman terminology and how these associate with concepts within the world. Based off empirical experience, we draw associations about the word “sheep” and create a mental picture because we have a semantic memory of what a sheep is.

Q

What is episodic memory?

A

Episodic memories are ones which are deeply encoded within the brain because a high level of emotional arousal was occurring at the time of the event. Traumatic experiences and very enjoyable moments may be particularly memorable because when the encoding process took place, it did so with greater intensity which consolidated the memory more effectively.
