Denotative meaning
Dictionary meaning of a word e.g. the word bachelor means an unmarried man
Connotative meaning
Emotional meaning associated with a word e.g. red has connotations of danger
Reflected meaning
adds additional meaning from other occurences of the same or similar words in certain contexts e.g. chronic means recurring but also means bad
Social meaning
associated beliefs about a social groups and markers e.g. craic has social meaning of northernness or irishness
Affective meaning
Personel or emotional expression of the spaker or writer e.g referring to someone old as a coffin dodger instead of a senior citizen implies the attitudes of the speaker towards the subject
collocative meaning
derived from words that frequently appear together e.g. handsome has a collocations of men since handsome women is an uncommon description
Semantic field
words and phrases that connect to a specific theme, topic or genre
Synonym
Words that share similar or identical meaning
Antonym
Words that have opposite meanings
Hypernyms
Words that label categories e.g. animal (category includes dog, cat and rabbit)
Hyponyms
Words that can be included in a larger, more general category e.g. the hyponyms car, bus, aero plane as a form of the hyponym transport
Sociolect
Language style used in a particular social group
Neology
the process of new word formation e.g. compounds, acronyms, initialisms
