Types Of Ltm Flashcards
Who theorised ltm being having multiple stores and when and why
Endel Tulving (1985) and because the msm was too simple
Name the 3 types of ltm
Episodic memory, semantic memory, and procedural memory.
Describe episodic memory
A ltm store for personal events. Retrieval must be done consciously and with effort
What 5 things are in episodic memory store
When the event occurred, people objects, places and behaviour involved
Describe semantic memory
A ltm store for our knowledge of the world. These memories usually need to be recalled deliberately
What is 3 things included in semantic memory
Facts, our knowledge of what words mean and what concepts are
Describe procedural memory
Our knowledge of how to do things. These memories are recalled without making a conscious or deliberate effort
What is 1 thing included in our procedural memory
Our memories of learnt skills
What is 1 thing included in our procedural memory
Our memories of learnt skills
2 case studies that support different types of LTM
HM and Clive Wearing
What happened to HM’s memory
He had epilepsy from age 16. He had surgery to remove his hippocampus from both sides of the brain. This cured epilepsy but destroyed his LTM
what 2 things happened to HM’s STM and LTM
STM stayed the same but LTM got destroyed. His episodic memory got damaged but his semantic and procedural are the same.
What happened to Clive wearing memory
He got anterograde amnesia from the flu and lost the ability to form new memories but his STM was normal.
HM and Clive wearing 2 counterpoints
A major limitation in the control of variables and lacks generalisability
A con to the different types of LTM
conflicting neuroimaging - Randy Buckner et al found that the episodic buffer is in the left side of the prefrontal cortex and the episodic memory on the right, however Tulvig said otherwise
