Types Of LTM Flashcards
1
Q
What are Semantic Memories?
A
Memories of the meaning of things.
2
Q
What are Episodic memories?
A
Memories of events.
3
Q
What are Procedural Memories?
A
Memories of skills and processes - driving a car.
4
Q
What are Explicit/Declarative Memories?
A
Memories that you have to consciously think about, including episodic and semantic.
5
Q
What are implicit/non-declarative memories?
A
Memories that are unconscious, and do not need to be explicitly thought about, including procedural.

Q
Reasons FOR the theory of LTM:
A
- Clinical studies for amnesia (HM) could make new procedural LTM but not episodic and semantic.
- Brain scanning evidence - Episodic memory stored in the hippocampus and frontal lobe, semantic in the temporal lobe, procedural in the cerebellum.
- Irish et al found that some Alzheimer’s patient can lack semantic but not episodic . This suggest separate stores.

Q
Reason AGAINST the theory of types of LTM
A
- Over-reliance in brain damage patients - Just because parts of their brain have been damaged doesn’t mean it had a specific function.
