Q

What is Episodic LTM?

A

-LTM store for personal EVENTS.
-Retrieved consciously and with effort.
-Stored with reference to contextual info eg. Time and place
-Located in hippocampus and other parts of the temporal lobe

Q

What is Semantic LTM?

A

-LTM store for our KNOWLEDGE of the world.
-Facts and knowledge of what words and concepts mean
-Retrieved consciously and with effort
-Located in temporal lobe

Q

What is Procedural LTM?

A

-LTM store for our knowledge of ACTIONS and SKILLS.
-Memories of learned skills.
-Recalled without making a conscious or deliberate effort to
-Located in Cerebellum and motor cortex

Q

What is the method of TULVING (1989)?

A

6 participants injected with radioactive gold detected in body with gamma ray detector. Thought about semantic memories or episodic memories. Think abt topic and 60 secs later injected with gold then scanned 8 secs later when the gold would’ve gone to their brains.

Q

What are the results of TULVING (1989)?

A

The 2 different tasks provided different patterns of blood flow in the brain. Episodic increased blood flow frontal lobe and Semantic increased blood flow in posterior region of cortex

Q

What is the conclusion of TULVING (1989)?

A

Episodic and semantic LTMs involve different parts of the brain and therefore separate parts of the LTM. Biological basis for differences in LTM.
