Q

What is Episodic memory

A
  • Long term memory store for personal events
  • Includes memories of when event occurred and the people, objects, places and behaviours involved within the memory
  • memories must be consciously retrieved
  • less resistant to forgetting

Q

What is semantic memory

A
  • store for general knowledge of the world
  • includes facts and knowledge of what words/concepts mean
  • NOT time stamped
memories must be recalled with conscious effort

Q

What is procedural memory

A
  • memory store for actions or skills
  • includes memory of learned skills
  • we can recall with little conscious effort
  • most resistant to forgetting

One strength of LTM is research support, this can be seen as Clive wearing had damaged episodic memory, and couldn’t remember day-to-day events, but his procedural memory remained intact as he could still play the piano, and his semantic memory remained intact as he knew the meaning of words, e.g. dog. This is a strength because research provides evidence for multiple types of long-term memory as if there was only one type of long-term memory, all of thrives actions would be affected and he would not be able to play piano or understand the meaning of words that for research strengthens the reliability of the theory as the findings support the theories predictions.

A

One stregnth of types of LTM is research support. Tulving et al found through neuroimaging that episodic memories of record from the left prefrontal, cortex and semantic memories of record from the right prefrontal cortex. This is a strength because research shows there are multiple locations from which memory is record, and therefore there must be multiple long-term memory stores, operating in different areas of the brain. Therefore the theory has high external validity as different types of LTM are recalled from different areas of the brain.

Strength of types of long-term memory is the real world applications. This can be seen by Belleville’s research who created an intervention to improve episodic memory where trained participants performed better on episodic memory. This is a strength because research into types of LTM can be used to educate/explain how a long-term memory works and findings may be used to treat symptoms or prevent symptoms of episodic memory loss loss, improving peoples quality of life there for the theory is useful.
