Types of Long term memory Flashcards
1
Q
Who came up with 3 different types of LTM?
What are they?
A
- Tulving (1972)
- Semantic
- Procedural
- Episodic
2
Q
Explain procedural LTM?
What part of the brain deals with this type?
Give an example?
A
- LTM responsible for knowing how to do something
- Does not involve conscious thought (automatic) & is a motor skill memory
- Procedural memories tend to be strong & concern themselves with ‘knowing how’
- Cerebellum
- e.g. Driving a car, swimming, writing
3
Q
Explain semantic memory?
What part of the brain deals with this type?
Give an example?
A
- LTM responsible for storing info about the world
- Factual info can be thought of as our dictionary/general knowledge
- Memories concern themselves with ‘knowing that’
- Hippocampus
- e.g. London, capital of England
4
Q
Explain episodic memory?
What part of the brain deals with this type?
Give an example?
A
- LTM responsible for storing info about life events
- Conscious thought & revolves around time & place
- Time-stamped events
- Hippocampus
- e.g. Someone’s marriage day
5
Q
Compare procedural & semantic memory?
A
- Both concerned with knowledge of something
- Semantic is factual info whereas procedural is automatic motor like skills
6
Q
Compare procedural & episodic memory?
A
- Both concerned themselves with storing info that can be recalled
- Episodic memory is timestamped events whereas procedural LTM’s are about knowing hoe
7
Q
Compare Episodic & semantic memory?
A
- Both involve the hippocampus for these types of LTM’s
- Episodic involves remembering events whereas semantic involves remembering knowledge
