Types of long term memory Flashcards
What is declarative memory?
Knowing that
What is non declarative memory?
Knowing how.
What is procedural memory?
Our memory of how to do things which often involve motor skills. We can recall these memory’s without a conscious decision to though we would struggle to explain to someone else how to do them. For example, riding a bike or driving a car. Procedural memory is non declarative.
What is semantic memory?
Semantic memory is our shared knowledge of the world. For example, how to apply to university or the meaning of words. We have to make a conscious effort to recall these memories. They are time stamped and less personal. They are declarative.
What is episodic memory?
Our ability to recall events from our lives. For example, our most recent trip to the dentist, a concert you went to. These memories are personal as they include people, places etc and require a conscious effort to recall them. The episodic memory is declarative.
Give a strength of the types of long term memory.
Brain scan evidence. Tulving had participants perform various memory tasks while their brains were scanned with a PET scanner. Episodic and semantic memories were found in the pre frontal cortex. Semantic in the left side and episodic in the right side. This shows a physical reality in the brain to the different types of long term memory.
Limitation of the types of long term memory.
Tulving has recently taken the view that the episodic and semantic memories are stored together in one store known as the declarative memory. The procedural memory is a distinct different type of memory as it is non declarative. This weakens the idea that there are three different types of long term memory.
