Types of Long-Term Memory Flashcards
Explicit Memory
Memory that requires a conscious effort to recall.
What types of LTM are explicit?
Semantic and episodic memory.
Semantic Memory
Memory of facts and general knowledge. (Paris is the capital of France.)
Episodic Memory
Memory of personal events and experiences. (Your trip to Paris last year.)
Implicit Memory
Memory that requires no conscious effort to recall.
What type of LTM is implicit?
Procedural memory.
Procedural Memory
Memory of motor skills. (Walking, eating.)
Describe the case of Clive Wearing.
Clive Wearing was a highly accomplished musician who developed global amnesia, depleting his STM and LTM.
What LTM store does Clive Wearing support?
Procedural memory.
How does Clive Wearing support the theory that there are multiple LTM stores?
Clive’s episodic and semantic memory was severely affected, often forgetting things like his wife’s name. However, his procedural memory stayed intact - he could still read, write, and play the piano.
Describe the case of Patient HM.
Patient HM, after a childhood bike accident, had severe memory impairments, and seizures.
What LTM store does Patient HM support?
Procedural memory, and some elements of episodic memory.
How does Patient HM support the theory that there are multiple LTM stores?
Patient HM’s procedural memory was intact, but he had trouble forming new explicit memories, due to his hippocampus being removed.
