Types Of Lens Flashcards
What is a concave lens?
A concave lens is thinner and flatter in the middle than the edges. Light passing through the thicker, more curved area of the lens bend more than light passing through the flatter areas. This causes the rays of light to spread out or diverge after passing through the lens.
What is a convex lens?
A convex lens is thicker in the middle than around the edges. This causes the refracting light rays to come together and converge.
What is a lens?
A lens is a curved piece of transparent material such as glass or plastic. Light refracts as it passes through a lens, causing the rays to bend.
When does an image form?
An image forms when light rays converge. The light rays spread out from points on the object. A convex lens refracts these rays so that they come back together.
What is the focal point?
The focal point is the point where light beams meet. It is the point where an image would appear in focus.
What is the focal length?
The focal length is the distance from the mid-region of the lens to the focal point.
Different types of a convex lens?
-double convex lens
-planoconvex lens
Different types of a concave lens?
-Double concave lens
-planoconcave lens
What are convex lenses used in?
Convex lenses are used in overhead projectors, cameras, movie projectors, and magnifying glasses.
What are concave lenses used in?
Concave lenses are often used in combination with convex lenses.
What does a convex mirror do?
A convex mirror produces a small image standing right side up. It reflects backs larger area than a concave mirror does. They are used for security purposes in stores.
What does a concave mirror do?
A concave mirror can reflect in two different ways. If the object is close, the mirror will make it appear larger and right side up. If the object is farther away, the mirror will make it appear smaller and upside down.
Examples of convex mirrors?
Store surveillance mirror, car side mirror,
Examples of concave mirrors?
Car headlights, flashlights, cosmetic mirror, dental mirror
Examples of plane mirrors?
Bathroom wall mirror, reflecting ball at a dance, one way mirror
