Types Of Injuries Flashcards
What are some indications that may tell you it might be an acute injury ?
- Sudden, severe pain
- Swelling
- Non weight bearing
- Deformation
Define a dislocation
An injury caused when the normal position of a joint is attached
How is a dislocation caused ?
Caused by a fall or blow, contact sport
What are some indications of a dislocation and how should it be treated ?
- Swollen , very painful, visibly out of place
- Treatment includes splint or sling
Define a sprain
Sprains are where one or more of the ligaments are stretched, twisted or torn
How are sprains caused ?
Sprains are often caused by too much force being applied to a joint
Define strain
Strains are when muscle fibres stretch or tear
How do strains occur ?
Strains often occur when muscle is stretched beyond its limits or is forced to contract too quickly
How can minor strains and sprains be treated ?
Through RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation
Define a fracture
A break in the bone
Name 6 types of fractures and describe them
Transverse fracture- fracture at a right angle (straight)
Oblique fracture- fracture is slanted
Spiral fracture- Very dangerous, sharp fracture can pierce skin
Comminuted fracture- when the bone is cracked or broken into more than two pieces
Avulsed fracture- where ligament breaks off part of bone
Greenstick fracture- Small fracture doesn’t go right through (usually common in children)
What are some indications that you may see with chronic injuries ?
Chronic injuries occur as a result of playing sport or exercising for a long time
- Pain when performing
- Dull ache at rest
- Swelling
How is Achilles Tendinitis caused ?
Who is it common in ?
What can it cause?
Caused by an overuse of the Achilles Tendon Common in runners Lots of pain Can cause the tendon to rupture Football, tennis, volleyball etc
What is a stress fracture?
Stress fracture is an overuse injury rather than a mechanical injury
How does a stress fracture happen?
How does it occur?
- Muscle bone become stressed and transfers the stress to the bones, causing a small crack
- Weight bearing activities
- Occurs when muscles become tired and the bones overload
- Common in running and jumping, e.g basketball, gymnastics
