Primary
not a symptom of a disease state
migraine, tension, cluster, benign cough, exercise, sexual activity
Secondary
symptom of another disease state
sinusitis, food/alcohol, trauma, stroke, medication overuse, infection
Migraine
with/without aura - visual changes unilateral throbbing pain moderate to severe worse on movement nausea, photophobia, photophobia
Tension
episodic/chronic nature
bilateral - mild/moderate
rubber band or tight pressure around head
not affected by movement
Cluster
more common in men 40-60 same time each day wake up with headache affects one side of the face around the eye boring intense pain
Sinus
inflammation or infection in paranasal sinuses
mild, localised, dull
pain behind cheekbones and forehead
bending forward worsens pain, coughing, sneezing
Medication overuse
common in those with longstanding history of headaches
pain medication increases pain signals making patient experience more pain
women 30-60
more than 14 days in one month lasts 4 hours
present on waking
MSG
throbbing or pressure sensation on temples associated with redness on the face and trunk - lasts 1 hour after eating food containing MSG
Hangover
bilateral migraine like throbbing pain
nausea
Caffeine
mild to severe throbbing pain
Hormones
severe migraine like headache - during pill free weeks
Eye strain
frontal aching pain - eye test
Glaucoma
frontal pain associated with eye pain, cornea cloudy, blurred vision or haloes
Meningitis
severe generalised headache, fever, neck stiffness, rash
