What does the term democracy mean?
A democracy is a type of government based upon the principle that all people are equal and collectively hold power.
What is a dictatorship?
A dictatorship is rule by one person or group. This person or group is all powerful and associated with a military takeover of a state. And example of a current dictatorship are the leaders of Sudan and Eritrea.
What is a Anarchy?
An Anarchy is a system where no form of government operates. It is usually after a civil war. An example is in Libya.
What is a One-party state?
A One-party state is a state where only one political party exists and runs the country and is often associated with a communist form of government. Some examples are China, North Korea, Vietnam and Cuba.
What is a Monarchy?
A Monarchy is a form of government where political power is held by a family and it is passed down through generations. Absolute Monarchies like Saudia Arabia, is when all the power is held by the Monarch. The UK has a Constitutional Monarchy where almost all of the Monarch’s power is given to the elected government.
What is a Theocracy?
A Theocracy is when religious leaders run the country. An example is Iran.
What is a Liberal Democracy?
A Liberal Democracy is a system of democracy through which certain freedoms of the individual are upheld and citizens are protected from excessive government power. The UK, USA and countries of the EU would describe themselves as Liberal Democracies.
What is a Direct Democracy?
A Direct Democracy is a system of government where all citizens are take part in decision-making. A modern form of Direct Democracy is referendums.
What is a Representative Democracy?
A Representative Democracy is a system of government where citizens are elected to represent the in an assembly. An example is your MP sitting in parliament.
What did the Magna Carta achieve?
It established the rights and powers of the king and the people of England.
What is the definition of Devolution?
The transfer of power from central to regional government.
