Types of forces Flashcards
Name the three motions of forces
Pull, push, twist
A definition of a force
A force is a pull, push or twist that acts on an object due to the interaction with another object
What is a contact force?
When objects are physically touching each other
What are Non contact forces?
When the objects are physically separated
Friction
Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. There are several types of friction: Dry friction is a force that opposes the relative lateral motion of two solid surfaces in contact.
Thrust
Thrust is a reaction force described quantitatively by Newton’s third law. When a system expels or accelerates mass in one direction, the accelerated mass will cause a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction, to be applied to that system
Gravitational force
Is the force applied using the law of gravity, which brings your body downwards.
Magnetic force
A magnetic field is a vector field that describes the magnetic influence on moving electric charges, electric currents, and magnetic materials. A moving charge in a magnetic field experiences a force perpendicular to its own velocity and to the magnetic field
Electrostatic force
The electrostatic force is an attractive and repulsive force between particles are caused due to their electric charges. The electric force between stationary charged body is conventionally known as the electrostatic force. It is also referred to as Columb’s force.
Upthrust
Is when an object in a liquid or gas goes upwards
Tension
In physics, tension is described as the pulling force transmitted axially by the means of a string, a cable, chain, or similar one-dimensional continuous object, or by each end of a rod, truss member
Air resistance
Air resistance is a force that is caused by air. The force acts in the opposite direction to an object moving through the air.
Vector
An arrow
What direction does the arrow point in?
It points in the direction of the resultant force, which is when if there are forces acted on both sides of an object the larger one is the resultant force
What are forces measured in
Newtons (N)
