Types of Force Flashcards
Types of forces
Four fundamental types:
Gravitational-Attractive forces between masses
Electromagnetic-Forces relating to static and moving charges.
Strong nuclear-Holds atomic nuclei together.
Weak nuclear-Responsible for radioactive decay.
All others are essentially electromagnetic.
Compression
The force in a squashed object.
Tension
The force in a stretched object.
Tension and compression are ‘elastic forces’
Friction
The force that resists two surfaces sliding past each other
Caused by ‘small bumps’ on two surfaces colliding
Drag
Resists movement through a gas or liquid. ‘group name’ for forces like air and water resistance.
Electrostatic
Force between charged objects
Magnetic
Force exerted by a magnet on magnetic materials
Normal Reaction
The force between two solid surfaces which stops them sinking into each other. It is always at right angles to surfaces.
Thrust
Driving force
Upthrust
The upwards force from a fluid on an object floating in it
Lift
The upwards force on an object like an aeroplane wing due to pressure differences above and below it.
