Types of Force Flashcards
Define a scalar quantity
Only has a size or magnitude
Define a vector quantity
Has both a magnitude and Direction
Describe what a force is
A push or pull that acts on an object due to the interaction with another object
Is Force a scalar or a vector quantity
Vector
Define a contact Force
A force that acts when objects are physically touching EG friction air resistance tension and a normal contact Force
Define a non-contact force
A force that acts From a Distance e.g. gravitational electrostatic and magnetic
State the size of the resultant force on an object if the forces acting on it are balanced
Zero
State the name of a force acting on an object due to gravity
Weight
State the name of the instrument that can be used to measure the weight of an object
A Newton meter
Define the term centre of mass
The point through which the weight of an object can be considered to act
Define the term elastic deformation
When an object can go back to its original shape and size when deforming forces are removed
Define inelastic deformation
When an object does not go back to its original shape and size 1 deforming forces are removed
Describe how to find the spring constant from a force extension graph of a spring
The gradient of the straight line section
