What is a threaded flange and when is it used?
Has the thread inside the flange bore which fits on the pipe with matching male thread on the pipe. This type of joint connection is speedy and simple, but not suitable for high temperatures and pressures. Mostly used with air and water.
What is a socket weld flange and when is it used?
Has a female socket in which the pipe is fitted. Fillet welding is done from outside the pipe. This type of socket is is used in small bore piping and suitable for low pressure and temperatures.
What is a slip-on flange and when is it used?
Has a hole with matching outside diameter of pipe from which pipe can pass. The flange is placed on pipe and fillet welded from both inside and outside. This flange is suitable for low pressure and temperature application.
What is a lap joint flange and when is it used?
Has a stub end and a loose backing flange. The stub end is butt-welded to the pipe and the backing flange freely moves over the pipe. This type of flange is used where frequent dismantling is required, and space is constrained.
What is a weld neck flange and when is it used?
This flange is welded to the pipe and is the most widely used type in process piping. It gives the highest level of joint integrity due to Butt-welded with a pipe. These types of flanges are used in high pressure and temperature application.
What is a blind flange and when is it used?
Is a blank disc with a bolt hole. It is used with another type of flange to isolate the piping system or to eliminate the piping end. Also, it is used as a manhole cover in the vessel.
What are the types of flange faces?
Flat face, raised face, ring joint, tongue and groove, male and female.
What is a flat face flange and when is it used?
It is a flange with a flat face. It is used when the counter flanges are flat face. A full face gasket is used with this type of flange.
What is a raised face flange and when is it used?
Has a small portion around the bore that is raised from the face. A gasket seat is used with this flange. Height of the face depends on the pressure and temperature rating.
What is a ring joint flange and when is it used?
Has a specialty designed groove in the metal gasket seat. It is used in high temperature and pressure services.
What is a smooth finish on the flange face and type of gasket that is used with it?
It has a smooth finish and is used with a metallic gasket.
What is a serration finish on the flange face and type of gasket that is used with it?
It has a serrated finish and can be spiral or concentric rings. A concentric finish is used with low density fluid. This flange is used with a non-metallic gasket.
