nuclear family
2 generations - (usually two heterosexual married parents with dependent children)
Traditional extended family
three or more generations living together or close - e.g with frequent contact between grandparents
Attenuated extended family
Nuclear families that live apart from their extended family but keep in contact via emails and phone calls
lone parent family
single parent and their dependent children
reconstituted family
step families created when parts of two previous families are brought together e.g two partners who each have children from past relations
how does a ‘household’ differ from a family?
a household is a group of people who live together though they can be related e.g in a family, but they do not have to be e.g lone person households (could be elderly or young student etc) or students sharing a flat etc
