What is cohabitation?
Cohabitation refers to partners who live together but they are not married.
What is the nuclear family?
A nuclear family is a family made up of two parents (man and woman) and their dependent child or children.
What is an extended family?
An extended family is a family involving at least three generations of family living under the same roof. For example living with great grandparents living with great grandchild and daughter/son.
What is a reconstituted family?
A reconstituted family describes the joining of two families after one or both of the partners separated from their previous partners. (blended family/step family).
What is a beanpole family?
beanpole family describes a family made up of many generations, but with few extended members (aunts, uncles, grandparents). Like a bean pole, family tree is long and thin.
What is a lone parent family?
A lone parent family describes a family in which there is just one parent bringing up one or more children. (Single mother or father).
What is a same-sex family?
same-sex family describes a family made up of a same-sex couple with children. (Gay/lesbian).
What is a matrifocal family?
Single-parent families headed by women.
What is a patriarchal family?
A family that is male dominated.
