Types of experiment Flashcards
1
Q
Lab experiment
A
Done under extremely high controls, in a scientific way
2
Q
Field
A
Field experiments are experiments carried out outside of laboratory settings. They randomly assign subjects (or other sampling units) to either treatment or control groups in order to test claims of causal relationships.
3
Q
Natural
A
When the IV occurs naturally e.g. the effects of institutionalisation
4
Q
Quasi
A
when the IV can’t be manipulated
5
Q
Lab strengths
A
- Only IV changes
- Well controlled
- Easy replicated
- Can identify cause and effect
6
Q
Lab weaknesses
A
- Lack external validity
- Low ecological validity
- Demand characteristics
7
Q
Field strengths
A
- High mundane realism
2. Not aware of study
8
Q
Field weaknesses
A
- Less Control
- Time and money
- Could be extraneous variables
9
Q
Natural strengths
A
- Studies real life
- Allows naturally
- High external validity
10
Q
Natural weaknesses
A
- Random allocation not possible
2. Demand characteristics
11
Q
Quasi strengths
A
- Allows comparison
2. Already exists
12
Q
Quasi weaknesses
A
- confounding variables
