Types of energy Flashcards
What is meant by the term energy?
Energy is the ability to ‘do work or cause a change’
Energy cannot always be seen, but it is everywhere in both living and non-living things
You can hear energy as sound.
You can see energy as light.
You can feel it as wind.
You eat it in an apple.
What is the unit for energy?
Energy is measured in Joule (J).
1000J = 1kJ
The two main types of energy
Kinetic energy
potential energy
Kinetic energy: description
Energy an object has due to its motion
eg. Feather falling, runner, train moving, ball rolling, theme park ride…
Kinetic energy types
Sound
Light
Electrical
Heat
ALL CONSIST OF MOVEMENT
potential energy
This is potential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object.
Energy sitting in a battery
Potential energy types:
Chemical Potential
Nuclear Energy
Elastic Potential Energy
Gravitational Potential Energy
All contain stored energy (no movement)
Types of Energy
electrical, nuclear, gravitational potential, Elastic potential, chemical potential sound, heat
elastic potential
description and Eg
Potential energy (stored energy) due to compression or expansion of an elastic object. i.e. a stretched or squashed object.
pulled rubber band
Gravitational potential
description and Eg
Potential (stored) energy due to an object’s position (up high).
This is calculated by
GPE = mass x height x g
g = 10 and is the strength of the gravitational field on Earth.
Eg. Plane flying over head
Chemical potential
description and Eg
This is potential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object.
electrical
description and Eg.
The energy caused by the movement of charges
Easily transported through power lines and converted into other useful forms of energy.
Nuclear
Description and Eg.
Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms
Released only from nuclear reactions.
E.g. The sun and all of the stars. (Fusion)
E.g. Nuclear power plants and the Atomic bomb. (Fission)
Sound
Description and Eg
A type of Kinetic energy (movement)
Sound waves are the movement of particles
Light
descript and Eg
Anything luminous gives off light energy, like the sun, light bulbs , candles and glow worms
