Q

What is meant by the term energy?

A

Energy is the ability to ‘do work or cause a change’

Energy cannot always be seen, but it is everywhere in both living and non-living things
You can hear energy as sound.
You can see energy as light.
You can feel it as wind.
You eat it in an apple.

elastic potential
description and Eg

A

Potential energy (stored energy) due to compression or expansion of an elastic object. i.e. a stretched or squashed object.

Q

Gravitational potential
description and Eg

A

Potential (stored) energy due to an object’s position (up high).
This is calculated by
GPE = mass x height x g
g = 10 and is the strength of the gravitational field on Earth.

Eg. Plane flying over head

Nuclear
Description and Eg.

A

Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms

Released only from nuclear reactions.
E.g. The sun and all of the stars. (Fusion)
E.g. Nuclear power plants and the Atomic bomb. (Fission)

Q

heat
description and Eg

A

The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are.
A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement.
