Types of Decision Making Flashcards
why do states join global governance organisations?
States join international organisations like the UN voluntarily as they are the most effective means of solving global problems
This also means that members tend to support their agendas and decisions but states will not always agree
what are some criticisms of such global governance organisations?
Powerful organisations like the US and they to receive a lot of criticism for being both too powerful and too weak
on one hand global governance organisations are accused of being a form of world government that imposes decisions on states removing sovereignty and democracy
On the other hand they are accused of being ineffectual and inefficient talking shops when nothing real is achieved because unanimity is required and states do not always agree
types of decision making
intergovernmental decision making
supranational decision making
what is intergovernmental decision making?
Intergovernmental decision-making is a form of decision-making in international organisations where all the states have an equal say in the outcome
The decision requires consensus and unanimity with each state having a veto
advantages of intergovernmental decision making
Maintain state sovereignty as no state is forced to except decisions that it does not want states are in control of their own destiny
Gives smaller states are clearer and louder voice as they can block decisions and have an equal say to much larger states
disadvantages of intergovernmental decision making
And ineffective way to make decisions as consensus is hard to achieve because each state can block the outcome
The outcome is usually the lowest common denominates are reached through compromise rather than the best possible decision, Everyone must compromise to achieve consensus which can result in poor and weak decisions
what is supranational decision making?
Supranational decision-making is a form of decision-making most associated with the EU
It means above the nation and does not require unanimity or agreement of all parties
Each individual state can have its interests ignored but still be required to adopt or accept decisions
advantages of supranational decision making
Decisions are more likely to be made as no one steak and block them this is a much more fission and speedier way to make decisions
Encourages cooperation as it is to the advantage of individual states to negotiate and compromise as they know they cannot ultimately stop the decision which encourages corporation
disadvantages of supranational decision making
State sovereignty potentially lost as states have to abide by decisions they may not have supported
Small countries may lose out to bigger states — tyranny of the majority
Bigger states may lose out to coalitions of smaller states — tyranny of the minority
