types of data :) Flashcards
what is qualitative data?
non-numerical, word based, descriptive data. e.g. hair colour, eye colour or gender.
what is quantitative data?
numerical data that records quantities. e.g. weight, height or marks in an exam.
what is discrete data?
numerical data that only takes on certain values. e.g number of children in a classroom, shoe sizes.
what is continuous data?
numerical data that can take on ANY value (within a given range). e.g. weight, height, temperature or time taken to run in a race.
what is raw data?
data that has JUST been collected, and hasn’t been ordered, grouped, rounded or cleaned yet.
what is categorical data?
data that can be sorted into none overlapping groups/categories (usually used for qualitative data). e.g. gender, continents.
what is ordinal data?
data that can be written in order or given a numerical scale/rank (usually used for qualitative data). e.g. a group of students marks in an exam.
what is bivariate data?
data that involves two related variables. e.g. the height and weight of a baby.
what is multivariate data?
data that is made up of more than two variables. e.g. comparing the height, weight, shoe size and age all together.
what is primary data?
data that is collected first hand. e.g. a survey you have carried out, or an interview you have done yourself.
what are the advantages of primary data?
(1) accurate
(2) you know how it was collected
(3) you can find answers to specific questions
what are the disadvantages of primary data?
(1) time consuming
(2) expensive
what is secondary data?
data that has already been collected/is already available.
what are the advantages of secondary data?
(1) easy to obtain
(2) cheap to obtain
(3) quick to obtain
(4) data from organisations that may be more reliable than data you collected yourself
what are the disadvantages of secondary data?
(1) method of collection unknown
(2) data may be out of date
(3) data may contain mistakes
(4) data may be from an unreliable source
(5) may be hard to find answers to specific questions.
