Types of data Flashcards
To be able to recall the appropriate vocabulary relating to data collection, and apply correctly in context.
What is a hypothesis?
An assumption made at the start of an
investigation. It should be a statement.
Raw data
Data just as it is collected – before it is
ordered grouped or rounded.
Quantitative data
Numerical observations or measurements.
Qualitative Data
Qualitative Data
Non –numerical observations (eg. eye colour).
Continuous Data
Measurable data eg. length height or time.
Can take any value in a given range
Discrete Data
Countable data eg. shoe size or number of
pets. Can only take certain values.
Categorical Data
Can be sorted into non-overlapping
categories.
Ordinal Data
Can be written in order or can be given a
numerical rating scale.
Bivariate Data
Involves pairs of related data eg. height
and weight of children.
Multivariate Data
Involves sets of three or more related
data values eg. Colour, leaf size and
height of plants.
Primary Data
Data collected by, or for the person going
to use it.
Secondary Data
Data collected by, and for someone else.
