Types of Controller Flashcards
What is an Aerodrome/TWR controller responsible for?
Responsible for safety and movement of the ACFT on the airfield from the time it pushed back from stand until it departs and vice versa.
What does an Aerodrome/TWR controller do? (3)
- ) Issues instructions for ACFT to taxi to and from the RWY.
- ) Issues clearances to TKOF and land.
- ) Issue routings and clearances to ACFT prior to departure to ensure safe movement of all vehicles moving around the airfield.
What is the RWY in use for arrivals/departures dependant on and why?
It is dependant on wind conditions as ACFT prefer to TKOF and land into wind.
What are the responsibilities of an Approach controller? (4)
- ) Takeover from Area Controllers as ACFT approaches AD.
- ) Give initial clearance to approach AD and put all approaching ACFT into the most efficient sequence for landing.
- ) In some cases, also responsible for the initial phase of flight after departure before transferring them to an Area Controller as well as any ACFT transiting the immediate airspace around the AD.
- ) If using radar, controller will issue headings, altitudes, speeds and any other relevant information to guide ACFT to final approach path for RWY in use.
Spacing between ACFT depends on a number of things such as…(3)
- ) Prevailing weather conditions.
- ) ACFT size.
- ) Number of ACFT waiting to depart.
Large ACFT create more __________ than small ACFT., therefore correct _______________between ACFT on the _______________ must be provided.
- ) Wake Turbulence.
- ) Wake Turbulence Separation.
- ) Final Approach Track.
What level of wake turbulence does a B737 produce?
Medium wake turbulence.
What level of wake turbulence does a B747 produce?
Heavy wake turbulence.
B737 must approach AD _____ miles behind a B747. However only _____ miles separation is required if the B747 follows the B737.
- ) 5 miles.
2. ) 3 miles.
What holding facilities do major airfields use if delays are expected?
Stacks.
How many stacks do Heathrow and Gatwick airports have?
4 and 2 stacks respectively.
Where are approach controllers often based?
Where is approach control for London airports based?
- ) At the AD for which the service is being provided.
2. ) Terminal Control Operations room at Swanwick.
When does the Approach controller transfer ACFT control to the AD controller?
When the ACFT is established on the final approach and is 6-12 nautical miles from the RWY.
What is an Area controller responsible for? (3)
- ) ACFT in the climb.
- ) ACFT in descent.
- ) En-route phase.
What does an Area controller do?
Issue levels, headings and speeds to separate ACFT to provide the most safe and expeditious route to the exit point.
