Types of Connective Tissue Flashcards
Loose connective tissue. Loose arrangement of fibers and cells; cushions and binds organs.
Areolar Tissue
Loose connective tissue. Stores fat for energy, insulation, and cushioning.
Adipose Tissue
Loose connective. Forms a network that supports other cells (e.g., in lymph nodes, spleen).
Reticular tissue
Forms strong, ropelike structures such as tendons and ligament. Makes up the lower layers of the skin (dermis)
Dense connective tissue
Dense connective tissue Attach skeletal muscles to bones
Tendons
Dense connective. ligaments connect bones to bones at joints. more stretchy and contain more elastic fibers than do tendons.
Ligaments
Firm but flexible tissue that provides support and cushioning
Cartilage
Most common type of cartilage. found in joints, nose, and respiratory passages
Hyaline cartilage
Cartilage.
Contains more elastic fibers; found in the ear and epiglottis
Elastic cartilage
Cartilage that contains dense collagen fibers; found in intervertebral discs and knee menisci
Fibrocartilage
Rigid connective tissue that supports and protects organs; contains a hard matrix of collagen fibers and calcium salts.
Bone (Osseous tissue)
A fluid connective tissue that transports nutrients, gases, and waste products throughout the body.
