Types of Conformity and Explanations Flashcards
What is Conformity?
A change in a persons behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people.
What are the three types of conformity?
There’s Internalisation, Identification and Compliance.
What is internalisation?
Deep type
When we take on the majority view because we accept it as correct (lasts when group is absent).
What’s identification?
Moderate type
When we act in the same way with the group because we value it and want to be part of it (don’t necessarily agree with what group believes)
What is Compliance?
Superficial and temporary type
It’s a temporary type of conformity where we pretend to go along with the majority view but privately disagree with it (lasts as long as the group is monitoring us)
What is informational social influence?
When we agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe it is correct. We accept it because we want to be correct as well. (Sort of internalisation)
What is normative social influence?
When we agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to be accepted, gain social approval and be liked.
(Sort of Compliance)
