types of conformity and explainations Flashcards
1
Q
kelman 1958
A
- suggested there were three types of conformity
- internalisation
- identification
- compliance
2
Q
who suggested there were three types of conformity (name and date)
A
kelman 1958
3
Q
internalisation
A
- Private and public change in opinion and behaviour
- Usually a permanent change
4
Q
indentification
A
- A person conforms to a group because they value something about them.
- A person may publicly change opinion or behaviour, but not privately
5
Q
compliance
A
- Going along with others’ in public, but not change in private opinion or behaviour
- Behaviour or opinion stops when group pressure stops
6
Q
two explainations for conformity
A
- normative social influence
- infomational sociial influence
7
Q
Deutsch and Gerard
A
- developed the two-process theory, based on two basic human needs- the need to be liked and the need to be right.
8
Q
ISI
A
- Who has the better information
- follow the behaviour of the majority because we want to be right
- Cognitive process
- leads to internalisation
- More likely in new situations
9
Q
NSI
A
- It is an emotional process
- Lead to compliance
- Occurs with strangers, friends and in stressful situations
10
Q
strengths of NSI
A
- Asch’s research- participants said they conformed to avoid disapproval
- Conformity fell by 12.5% when answers were written down instead this avoided normative group pressure
11
Q
limitations of NSI
A
- does not predict conformity every time
- Some people really care about others liking them (nAffiliators) They want to relate to other people
-Teevan found students who were nAffiliators were most likely to conform
12
Q
what is the name for people that really care about what others think of them
A
nAffiliators
13
Q
strengths of ISI
A
- Lucas et al. (2006) found participants conformed more often when the question was difficult
14
Q
limitations of ISI
A
- Asch found conformity reduced when there is a dissenting participant they may reduce power of ISI as they provide a source of social info and they reduce power of NSI as they provide social support Therefore, it is hard to separate ISI and NSI and both of them probably operate together in real-life
