types of conformity Flashcards
lesson 1
what is conformity
its a form of social influence that results in a change of a persons behaviour due to real or imagined pressure from groups or people
which scientist distinguished the three types of conformity
kelman (1958)
what are the three types of conformity
compliance, internalisation, identification
compliance
- when people change their views so they are in line with majority
- there is no change privately, only last while group is present
- it is superficial and temporary
example of compliance
you complimenting someone’s outfit even though its not as good in your opinion, but u said it to everyone else
internalisation
- changing opinion, so that its in line with majority
- the individual evaluates and comes to the decision is correct
- this leads to their own individual personal beliefs changing aswell
- this means they will accept the belief publically AS WELL AS privately
- this is a more deeper and permamnet form compared to compliance
example of internalisation
a student watching others in school and eventually starts wearing clothes like them, bc they value their dress sense
identification
- we change to opinions of the group bc theres something abt the griup that we value
- we change our views to be a part of it
- we agree publically and privately BOTH
example of identification
an example would be when ur non veggie andd ur hanging out w ur veggie group and make a decision to eat veg food bc u like it. when ur alone u eat meat otherwise
