Types Of Conformity Flashcards
What is conformity
A change in a person’s behaviour/opinions as a result of real/imagined pressure from a person or group of people

What is compliance
Conforming publicly but continuing to privately disagree, stops when there is no group pressures to conform and is therefore a temporary behaviour change
What is identification
Moderate form of conformity where we act the same as the group because we share their values and want to be accepted, change of belief/behaviour is often temporary and only felt in the presence of others
-happens when conform to fulfil social role eg police officer
What is internalisation
Deepest type of conformity where a person conforms publicly and privately because they have internalised and accepted the views of the group, long lasting as behaviour changed even when no group pressure to conform
-most likely to occur when the majority have greater knowledge and members of the minority have little knowledge to challenge the majority position
Three types of conformity ordered from shallowest to deepest
