What is conformity?

A

A form of social influence where a person change their behaviour, attitudes or beliefs so that they are in line with the majority. This occurs due to pressure from the majority, this pressure can be imagined or real

What is compliance?

A

When an individual changes their public attitudes and beliefs, to fit in with the majority, but not their private beliefs. It is a temporary form of conformity and often associated with NSI.

What is identification?

A

When an individual accepts social influence because they want to be associated with a role model or a group. They will copy the role model/ groups behaviour, attitudes and beliefs because they feel connected to the role model

What is internalisation?

A

When an individual change their attitudes, beliefs and behaviours publicly and privately in order to be right and fit in with the majority. The individual examines their own behaviour and attitudes and beliefs based on what other people are saying and decides that the majority is correct. It is deeper than compliance and more permanent
