What is a PC/desktop computer?
PC/desktop usually refers to a general-purpose computer that is made up of a separate monitor, keyboard, mouse and processor unit.
What are the advantages of a PC computer over a laptop computer?
- A PC’s spare parts and connections tend to be standardized, resulting in lower costs than a laptop’s.
- The desktop tends to have a better specification for a given price
- Desktop’s power consumption is not critical since they usually plug straight into a wall socket
- Because they are usually fixed in one location, there is less likelihood of them being damaged
- Internet access is also more stable since they are not moved around, ensuring the user will always have the same data transfer rate.
What are the disadvantages of a PC computer over a laptop computer?
- They are not particularly portable since they are made
up of separate components - Because they are not particularly portable, it is necessary to copy files, when you want to do some work elsewhere with a laptop you simply take the whole computer with you.
- They tend to be more complicated since all the components need to be carried around with you.
What is a Laptop computer?
It refers to a type of computer where the monitor, keyboard, pointing device and processor are all together in one single unit. This makes them extremely portable.
What are the key features you would expect to find in a laptop?
- They are lightweight
- They have a low power consumption and long battery life.
- The processor doesn’t generate too much heat
What are the advantages of Laptop computers when compared to Desktop computers?
- Their portability
- Because everything is in one single unit, there are no trailing wires
- They can take full advantage of Wi-Fi
- Since they are portable, they can link to any multimedia system
What are the disadvantages of Laptop computers when compared to Desktop computers?
- They are easily stolen since they are portable
- They have limited battery life
- The keyboard and pointing device can be awkward to use
What is a tablet?
They are a relatively new Internet-enabled portable computer. They work similarly to Smartphones. They use touch screen technology and don’t have a keyboard
which is a part of the touch screen and keys are touched by fingers or a stylus. Internet
is usually through Wi-Fi or 3G/4G/5G connectivity
Features of a tablet
- High-definition, anti-glare
displays - Front and back-facing
cameras - Lower weight and longer
battery life than laptops - Bluetooth connection to
printers and other devices - Flash (solid state) memory
and cloud storage facilities to
backup and synchronize
(sync) data source - Sensors to carry out the
different functions such as the
a. Proximity sensor
b. Accelerometer
c. Speech recognition system
What are some examples of tablet sensors?
a. Proximity sensor
b. Accelerometer
c. Speech recognition system
What are the advantages of tablets when compared to laptops?
- Very fast to switch on
- Fully portable
- Touchscreen technology
- Can use several Apps as standard like the built-in camera
- Don’t generate any heat
- The battery life of a tablet is longer than a Laptop
- When the power button is pressed it goes into standby but is still connected to the
Internet so that you can still hear alerts from emails…etc
What are the disadvantages of tablets when compared to laptops?
- They have limited memory
- They can be expensive if the Internet is accessed through 3G/4G/5G mobile
networks - Typing on a touch screen can be slower than a keyboard on a laptop.
- Laptops tend to support more types of file formats compared to tablets
What is a Phablet?
It is a tablet designed as a hybrid
between a tablet and a smartphone
and has a smaller screen than a tablet
(between 12 cm and 15 cm display
size).
What does GPS stand for?
Global Positioning System
