Types of Comformity Flashcards
What are the three types of conformity?
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
What are the features of Compliance?
Individuals go along with a group to gain approval, or to avoid disapproval
It is desirable for them to fit in
It doesn’t change their private views
Does compliance lead to a change in private or public views?
PUBLIC
Their private views remain the same, they are only changing their public views to avoid disapproval
What are the features of Identification?
An individual may accept an influence because they want to be associated with that group
They accept these beliefs to be right and true, but only for the purpose of fitting in with that group
What is an example of identification?
The ‘cool kids’ smoke, so in order to fit in with them, a child may stark smoking too. (To be seen as a ‘cool kid’)
Does identification lead to a change in private or public views?
Both (sort of)
They display the behaviour in PUBLIC, but also believe in the behaviour in PRIVATE, however only in the presence of that group
What are the features of Internalisation?
Individuals go along with a group because they ACCEPT the belief as right and true
They may already agree with a group, or be convinced through argument that the group is correct.
Does internalisation lead to a change in public or private views?
BOTH
They internalise/ believe the view is correct so display it publicly, as well as believing the belief is true in private too
