Types Of Cold Environments. Flashcards
Tundra (or periglacial).
Are found in dry, high-latitude areas.
Found on the fringes of polar environments. (Canada/ Alaska).
Permanent frozen ground (permafrost).
Alpine
Found in high altitude areas.
May contain ice caps, mountain glaciers and tundra environments.
Cold winters with heavy snowfall, warm summers.
Glacial (or polar).
Are mainly land based. (Can be maritime).
Very dry cold environments (no precipitation).
Characteristics of clod environments.
Little vegetation.
Lots of snow and ice.
Sparsely populated.
What are cold environments?
Icy landscape found in high latitudes (around the poles) and high altitudes (alpine areas).
What are the two types of glaciers?
Polar.
Temperate.
What are the characterises of Polar glaciers?
Cold based, occur near the poles, ice frozen to the bed rock, very little movement, erosion or transportation.
What are the characteristics of a temperate glacier?
Water present throughout the ice mass, moves easily due to water ‘lubricating’ the surface - glacier slides down the slopes.
(Can move as much as 200m a year).
