Types of Coaching Questions Flashcards
Learn different types of questions
What is a reframing question?
Helps them find a new perspective.
What can you learn from this?
What is a refocusing question?
Helps direct them toward action and/or back onto their goal or outcome.
What is the first thing you need to do?
What is an expanding question?
Helps them consider how different options lead to different outcomes
What would you do if “X”?
What is a challenging question?
Helps the client understand why they believe what they believe.
How do you know that?
What is a leading question?
Leading questions are questions that imply my opinion or judgement, therefor, I’m projecting.
I want to avoid these questions.
Do you want to stay with that employer that’s treated you badly?
Unless it’s in the context of sales. Example: Are you going to invest in your future by enrolling in the program?
What is a reflective question?
Helps them reflect on their own thoughts and beliefs.
You said “X”, may I ask why?
May uncover different outcomes.
What is a closed question?
Closed questions are questions that the client can answer with a yes or no reply.
AVOID “yes” and “no” questions.
Are you going to carry out this action this week?
Ask a scale question which is more likely to stimulate the coachee to consider the question more deeply and answer honestly.
How do I rephrase a why question?
Examples: What makes you think that?
What is it that attracts you to this option at this time?
How did you arrive at this decision?
When did that thought occur?
“Why” questions are philosophical.
They can cause resistance, or take up a lot of time. The other question words are much more concrete and useful for coaching: Who, what, when, where and how.
