What are the 2 main types of clauses?
- The Main or Principal Clause
- The Subordinative Clause
What tells us the number of clauses?
Remember the number of verbs tells us the number of clauses
Types of Subordinate Clauses?
1.The Subordinative Adverbial Clause
2.The Subordinative Adjectivial Clause
3.The Subordinative Noun Clause
Whar is the Subordinative Adverbial Clause?
This type of clause gives a reason or supporting explanation to the main clause.
The Adverbial Clause also usually begins with a CONJUNTION.
Example: The children jumped for joy when they saw the presents.
Conjunction- When
Verb- Jumped
Therefore, the main clause is “The Children jumped for joy”
And teh subordinative adverbial clause is “when they saw the presents”
What is the Subordinative Adjectival Clause?
This type of clause gives more information on the main clause and usually begin with a relative pronoun.
The relative pronouns are who, which, whose, whom, that.
For Example- We met the man who saved the child.
Main Clause- We met the man
SUB ADJ C- “who saved the child”
What is the Subordinative Noun Clause?
This type of clause answers to the question and usually begins with “that or what”.
For example- The principal told the children that they should not run.
Main Clause- The principal told the children
SUB N C- “that they should not run”
