types of chemical reactions Flashcards
name the six different type of chemical reactions
synthesis, decomposition, single replacement,
double replacement, neutralization, and combustion.
define a synthesis reaction
A synthesis reaction is when two or more reactants (usually elements) join to form a compound.
define a decomposition reaction
A decomposition reaction is when compounds breaks down into two or more products (often elements).
define a single replacement reaction
A single replacement reaction is when a compound and an element react, and the element switches places with part of the original compound. Positive ions will only replace a positive ion and negative ions will only replace a negative
define a double replacement reaction
Double Replacement is when two compounds react, with elements switching places between the original compounds
define a neutralization reaction
Neutralization is when an acid (most compounds starting with H) and a base (most compounds ending in OH) react.
define a combustion reaction
A combustion reaction is when a hydrocarbon reacts with Oxygen to produce Water and Carbon Dioxide
