Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Synthesis
A compound formed from the 2 reactants
A + B = AB
Decomposition
Elements or smaller compounds. Not easy to predict
AB = A + B
Single Displacement
Metal element will replace the metal in the compound or non-metal will replace the non-metal in the compound
A + CD = C + AD (if metal)
Or
D + CA (if non-metal)
Double Displacement
The first part of each compound will switch places to form 2 different compounds
AB + CD ——> AD + CB
- switching alike ones only
Neutralization
A type of double Displacement reaction. The products will be H2O and a salt
Acid + Base = water and salt
HA + BOH = H2O + BA
Combustion
Complete Combustion: products are H2O and CO2
Incomplete combustion: products will also include C and CO
xHg + O2 —–> CO2 + H2O (complete)
CxHy + O2 —–> CO2 + H2O + CO + C (incomplete)
