Types of Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is synthesis?
A formation reaction in which two or more reactants (usually elements) join to form a compound
What is an example of synthesis?
A+B=AB
What is Decomposition?
Decomposition reactions are the opposite of synthetic reactions.
When compounds break down into two or more elements.
What is an example of Decomposition?
AB=A+B
What is Single Replacement?
A single replacement reaction is when a compound and an element react, and the element switches places with part of the original compound. Positive ions will only replace a positive ion and negative ions will only replace a negative ion.
What is an example of Single Replacement?
A+BC=B+AC Where A is a metal
A+BC=C+BA Where A is a nonmetal
What is Double Replacement
Double Replacement reactions is when two compounds react, with elements switching places between the original compounds.
What is an example of Double Replacement?
AB+CD=AD+CB
What is Neutralization?
Neutralization is when an acid (most compounds starting with H) and a base (most compounds ending in OH) react.
What is an example of neutralization?
Acid+base= Salt+water
or HX+MOH=MX+H2O
(Where X and M are elements or polyatomic ions)
What is combustion?
A combustion reaction is when a hydrocarbon reacts with Oxygen to produce water and Carbon Dioxide.
What is an example of combustion?
CxHy+O2=CO2+H2O
X and Y represent integers
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is one that releases energy to break bonds (commonly measured in kilojoules).
What is an endothermic reaction?
An Endothermic reaction is one that absorbs energy when bonds are broken.
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
6CO(2) + 6H(2)O → C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2).
