Types of Car lights
- dipped headlights
- full-beam lights
- fog lights
- hazard warning lights
- indicators
- sidelights/parking lights
- tail lights
- brake lights
What are DIpped Headlights and when are they used?
- Brighter than sidelights, dimmer than full beam headlights
- Used when visibility is seriously reduced (can’t see less than 100m in front of you)
What are Full-Beam lights and when are they used?
- Brightest type of headlight on normal vehicles
- Only used on unlit stretches of road at night
- When meeting oncoming traffic or driving on left-turning bends you must turn off full beam as they can be dazzling
What are Fog lights and when are they used?
- Designed to cut through fog & mist
- Only use when visibility is below 100m, if visibility is better than this you can dazzle other drivers
What are Hazard Warning lights and when are they used?
- used when vehicle is stationary & warn others you’re causing a temporary obstruction
- can use them on motorway if there’s an obstruction up ahead that you need to warn drivers about
What are Indicators and when are they used?
- should use indicators to show other road users and pedestrians where you intend to turn e.g. roundabouts, overtaking and changing lanes
What are Sidelights/parking lights and when are they used?
- not as bright as headlights so used by drivers to make themselves visible to traffic
- used when parked on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit over 30mph
- When speed limit less than 30mph sidelights not necessary as long as your spot is a recognised parking bay or lay-by or you’re facing direction of the traffic flow, close to kerb & at least 10m from nearest junction
What are Tail lights and when are they used?
- Red, found on back of car, turned on/off at same time as headlights
What are Brake lights and when are they used?
- Red, located near tail lights
- Illuminated to show other drivers you’ve applied your brakes & are slowing down
What can the police give when someone’s brake lights are faulty?
- verbal warning
- £60 fine & 3 points on your licence
- a vehicle defect rectification notice (14-day order to fix)
- in severe cases car can be taken off the road immediately.
