Flat Bone
Bone is flat (Ribs, scapula, Sternum)
Sutural Bone
Small, extra bone plates in the cranium
Short Bone
Shaped roughly as a cube (hand and feet bones, patella)
Irregular Bone
Have no distinct shape (vertebrae, mandible)
Sesamoid Bone
Small bone commonly found within a muscle or tendon near joint surfaces (patella)
Long Bone
Has a shaft and is longer than it is wide (Femur, radius, phalanges)
Fibrous Joints
Dense, connective tissue; high strength; little movement
Cartilaginous Joints
layers of cartilage; Synchondroses and Symphyes;
Synchondroses Joint
Primary; allow for bone growth (ossification); disappears; no movement
Symphyses Joint
Secondary; does not ossify; midline of body; limited movement
Synovial Joints
Greatest movement; may contain articular discs, ligaments; 6 types
Synovial- Elbow
Hinge joint
Synovial- Hip
Ball and Socket
Synovial- Sliding and gliding
Plane
Synovial- Origin of thumbs
