Types of bones Flashcards
What are the five main types of bones
Long
Short
Flat
Irregular
Sesamoid
What is the shaft and ends of a bone also know as?
Shaft: Diaphisis
Ends: Epiphysis
What are the nine examples of long bones in your body?
Humerus
Radius
Ulna
Femur
Tibia
Fibula
Metatarsals
Metacarpals
Phalanges
Describe a short bone and where are they found on the body?
Short bones are small, light, strong and cube-shaped bones.
The carpals and tarsals of the
wrist and ankles are examples
Describe a flat bone and where are they found on the body?
Flat bones are thin, flattened and slightly curved, with a large surface area. Examples include the scapula, sternum and cranium.
Describe a irregular bone and where are they found on the body?
They have complex shapes that fit none of the categories above.
The bones in the spinal column (vertebrae) are a good example.
Describe a sesamoid bone and where are they found on the body?
Usually found within a tendon. These bones provide a smooth surface for the tendon to slide over.
The largest sesamoid bone is the patella in the knee joint.
What does the axial skeleton consist of?
The cranium
The sternum
The ribs
The vertebrae
Which bones consist of the appendicular skeleton
Humerus
Radius
Ulna
Carpals
Metacarpals
Phalanges
Scapula
Femur
Tibia
Fibula
Patella
Tarsals
Metatarsals
Clavicle & pelvis
Argue why the axial skeleton is most important area of the skeleton for a prop?
Yes: protects vital organs, good support for a scrum
No: Without the appendicular skeleton they could not tackle, run or throw the ball effectively
