What is compliance?
going along with others in public but not privately changing personal opinions/behaviour
only a superficial change

What is identification?
conforming to the opinions/behaviour of a group bc there is smth abt the group we like/identify with + want to be a part of
means we publicly change our opinion/behaviour to be part of a group
often linked to social roles

What is internalisation?
occurs when a person genuinely accepts the group norms - this results in a private change of opinions/behaviour + is likely to be permanent bc attitudes have been internalised
this change persists even when the other members of the group are not present

What are the 2 explanations of Conformity?
normative social influence
informational social influence
What is normative social influence?
when individuals follow the behaviour of the group (majority) because of social norms they want to appear normal and ‘fit in’
ppl do not like to appear foolish + prefer to gain social approval rather than be rejected
When does NSI happen?
with strangers bc concerned abt rejection
AND
with ppl you know bc you care abt their opinion
What type of process is NSI?
emotional - to do with how you feel
What is informational social influence?
when individuals follow the behaviour of the group (majority) because they want to be right/correct and they believe the group has more info on a particular topic
When does ISI happen?
in situations that are new to a person as they don’t necessarily know what is right
AND ambiguous (unclear) situations as you don’t know the correct answer
What type of process is ISI?
cognitive - to do with what you think
