Types and Explanations Of Conformity Flashcards
1
Q
Define conformity (2)
A
Changes in individuals behaviours and beliefs because of real or imagined group pressure
2
Q
What are the three types of conformity?
A
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
3
Q
Define compliance
A
- most superficial and least permanent change in attitude
- publicly change to groups beliefs/bhvs to fit in
- but privately revert back to original beliefs/bhvs when group pressure stops
- may not agree with what group is doing
- linked to NSI
4
Q
Define identification
A
- stronger type of conformity
- possible private and public acceptance
- indv looks to group for guidance and adjusts bhv/beliefs
- indv takes on a role within the group as membership of group is desirable
- when group is no longer seen as valuable, bhv may revert back
- involves elements of compliance and internalisation
- as indv accepts attitudes and bhvs as right but only to be accepted as a member of the group.5
5
Q
What are the two explanations of confirmity?
A
ISI and NSI
5
Q
Define internalisation
A
- deepest and most permanent change in attitude
- public and private change of bhvs/beliefs to go along with group
- as they accept the attitudes into their own cognitions
- bhv continues when group is not present
- linked to ISI
5
Q
Define NSI
A
- driven by desire to be liked
- indv goes along with groups bhv to avoid ridicule, gain acceptance and fit in
- emotional process
- leads to compliance (public change, privately revert)
6
Q
Define ISI
A
- driven by desire to be right
- when an indv is unsure about how to behave, they conform by seeking info from group about how to behave and assume its right
- cognitive process
- leads to internalisation (public and private change)
7
Q
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate explanations of confirmity?
A
RTS ISI - Jenness jelly beans in jar
Weakness of RTS ISI by Jenness - eco val
RTS NSI - Asch lines
